In Victoria, Building Owners need to be aware of new obligations in relation to buildings built before July 1994 which now require an Annual Essential Safety Measures Report (AESMR) to be prepared each year with the first required by 14th June 2009. The new Australian Standard AS 1851 – 2005 for Maintenance of Fire Protection Systems and Equipment should be adopted in Victoria immediately for older buildings that are not subject to the older AS1851 maintenance conditions specified on an Occupancy Permit. In some States such as QLD, adoption of the most recent AS1851 revision is mandated by that state’s legislation.
